There are a variety of reasons that these joints experience issues. Sometimes, TMD happens because of a crooked bite or because you grind and clench your teeth at night when you’re sleeping (or because of stress). Symptoms that may indicate you have TMJ disorder include:

  • Tenderness or swelling of the face
  • Stiffness or pain in the jaw joints
  • Neck and shoulder discomfort
  • Tingling in the arms
  • Limited ability to open or close mouth
  • Jaws that lock
  • Clicking, popping, or grating noises
  • Problems with chewing and uncomfortable bites
  • Ringing or pressure in the ears
  • Dizziness

Finding Relief

Dr. Rogers can provide TMJ therapy by first assessing your jaw joints and connecting tissues, as well as the state of your teeth. He’ll then discuss your symptoms and ask questions about the issues you have with chewing, biting, and grinding.

Your treatment will depend on the severity of symptoms, the cause of your TMD, and how long you’ve been suffering. In some cases, Arrow Springs Dental can treat TMD simply by ensuring the jaw rests or gets some gentle muscle stretching exercises. In more severe cases, though, you may need surgical intervention.

For cases where medical intervention will better benefit you, we may have you use a splint or bite plate. The plastic guard fits over your teeth and reduces clenching and grinding while keeping your jaw in an optimal position. We can also create nightguards to treat bruxism, which is a condition that occurs when you grind your teeth during nightly rest.
